FIGURE 6a

Figure 6a
, above, shows landings occurring on Runway 6, while departures are using Runways 6 and 15.  Winds are from the east to southeast and good visibility prevails.  Jets and turboprops, aircraft requiring longer runways for takeoff, will use Runway 6 and smaller single engine and twin propeller aircraft will depart from either Runway 6 or 15. This is another example of using  dual runways to meet heavy departure demand.

Neighborhoods affected by this configuration would be:

Arrivals to Runway 6

Aircraft inbound to the Airport from the north or northwest will proceed around Smith's Point and follow the 1-mile-off-shore noise abatement route to land on Runway 6.  Aircraft inbound to Nantucket from the southwest will proceed over-water to the final approach course to Runway 6.

Departures from Runway 6

About 80 - 85 percent of departing traffic will follow the visual noise abatement departure route to Folger's Marsh and Third Point.  Most northbound departing traffic on instrument flight plans, under positive control of the FAA, will be directed to turn northbound to a heading of 010 degrees after departure.  Some higher performance air carrier and twin jet aircraft will be directed to depart straight ahead toward Quidnet, Squam and Wauwinet before being directed northbound or southbound toward the aircraft's destination.

Departures from Runway 15

Tom Nevers and Madequecham will see some over-flights of air taxi and single engine aircraft and smaller twin jets departing from Runway 15.  After departure, aircraft will either turn left following the 1-mile-off-shore route around Sconset and the eastern shoreline, or turn westbound on course over-water toward the aircraft's destination.

FIGURE 6b

Figure 6b
, below, shows landings occurring on Runway 6 and departures using Runway 15 during the hours of
6 a.m.- 8 a.m.  Special Voluntary Early Morning Noise Abatement Procedures are in effect when good visibility prevails.  Aircraft, in this case, can be seen arriving off-shore to Runway 6 and departing off-shore from Runway 15.  These procedures were established in 2000 in an effort to maximize over-water arrivals and departures when light air traffic and wind/weather patterns permit.
